Home-Gym Equipment Essentials

My Home Gym Essentials

You do not need a huge home gym or a ton of equipment to get stronger and stay active at home. But over the years, I’ve collected some things that I genuinely use for strength training, yoga, mobility, cardio, hiking training, and getting more movement into my day.

These are the things you’ll see me using in my home gym and in my videos. I’ll continue updating this page as I add new equipment and review things on my YouTube channel.

Walking & Cardio

Merach UltraWalk W60 Plus Walking Pad

Walking has become a huge part of my fitness routine, and I wanted something I could use while working from home as well as for dedicated incline walking and hiking training.

The Merach UltraWalk W60 Plus has earned a permanent spot in my home gym. I can put it under my standing desk and get steps while I’m working, increase the incline when I want a more challenging walk, and store it vertically when I’m finished.

I especially like the Level 12 Incline, MERACH App, remote control, Bluetooth speaker, and the fact that the walking surface works well for my stride at 5'10".

Peloton

My Peloton gives me another indoor cardio option when I want a dedicated workout rather than simply getting more steps throughout the day.

I especially like having indoor options because living in Arizona means there are several months of the year when outdoor cardio isn't particularly appealing!

Strength Training

Strength training is a major part of my fitness routine, especially as I get older. I don't think a home gym needs every weight imaginable, though. I like equipment that gives me options without taking over the entire room.

PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells

One set of dumbbells with multiple weight options means I don't need an entire wall covered in individual dumbbells. If you're building a home gym in a smaller space, adjustable weights can make a lot of sense.

PowerBlock Adjustable Kettlebell

Same concept, but with a kettlebell. I can change the weight depending on the exercise without needing several different kettlebells sitting around my gym.

PowerBlock Workout Bench

A good adjustable bench opens up a ton of possibilities for strength training at home and pairs nicely with adjustable dumbbells.

Traditional Dumbbells

If you prefer individual dumbbells instead of an adjustable set, you can choose the weights that make sense for your current strength level and add more as you progress.

Dumbbell Weight Rack

Because once you start collecting dumbbells, eventually they need somewhere to live. 😂

Functional Strength & Conditioning

These are some of the smaller pieces of equipment I use to add variety to workouts without adding another giant machine to my home gym.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are probably one of the most versatile and inexpensive pieces of home workout equipment you can own. They can be used for strength training, mobility, assistance work, warm-ups, and plenty more.

Resistance Loops

I use resistance loops for strength work, activation exercises, mobility, and adding resistance to exercises without needing another set of weights.

Battle Ropes

When I want to add some higher-intensity conditioning, battle ropes give me a way to get my heart rate up while working much more than just my legs.

Pull-Up Bar

A simple way to add pulling and upper-body strength work to a home gym without taking up much space.

Yoga, Pilates, Balance & Mobility

Yoga and mobility are obviously a big part of what I do, so my home gym has plenty of equipment that isn't just about lifting weights.

You certainly don't need every one of these things, but they give me more options for mobility, core work, balance, stability, recovery, yoga, and Pilates-inspired exercises.

BOSU Ball

Great for balance, stability, core work, and adding another challenge to exercises I already do.

Stability Ball

I use a stability ball for core work, mobility, stretching, and different strength exercises.

👉 Shop My Stability Ball

Pilates Ball

A small piece of equipment that doesn't take up much room but can add a surprising amount of variety to core, Pilates, mobility, and stability work.

👉 Shop My Pilates Ball

Pilates Ring

Another compact piece of equipment I can use for resistance and Pilates-inspired exercises.

Foam Roller

One of those basic pieces of equipment that's always useful to have around for mobility and recovery work.

Aerobic Step

Don't underestimate a basic step. I can use this for cardio, lower-body strength exercises, step-ups, and plenty of other movements.

Home Gym Storage

The more equipment you collect, the more important this category becomes. 😂

I like having a place for everything because equipment that's easy to get out—and easy to put away—is equipment I'm much more likely to actually use.

Home Gym Storage Rack

This helps keep all of the smaller pieces of equipment from ending up scattered around the room.

Dumbbell Weight Rack

I also use a dedicated rack to keep dumbbells organized and off the floor.

What Do You Actually Need for a Home Gym?

Please don't look at everything on this page and think I'm telling you that you need to buy all of it.

You don't.

I'm a big believer in getting back to the boring basics and making fitness fit into your life rather than making it unnecessarily complicated.

Start with what you're actually going to do.

If you want to get stronger, a good set of dumbbells, a bench, and some resistance bands can take you a long way. If you work from home and want to move more throughout the day, a walking pad may make more sense. If yoga, mobility, and balance are your priorities, your home gym is going to look completely different.

Buy equipment that removes barriers and makes it easier to do the things you already know you need to do consistently.

I'll keep updating this page as my own home gym evolves and as I review new equipment on my YouTube channel.
